Franklin County
Franklin County, one of the three Champlain Valley counties Lang Associates serves in Vermont, is the most northwestern of the state’s 14 counties. Its northern boundary is the border with Canada’s Quebec province, and its near neighbors are Orleans County to the east, Lamoille County to the southeast, Chittenden County to the southwest, and Grand Isle County to the west. Much of Franklin’s western edge is along the eastern shore of Lake Champlain.
The shire town is St. Albans, a busy hub for the more than 45,000 who live in Franklin County. The County comprises 16,765 households, and 37.70% of these host children under the age of 18. The average household, according to 2000 United States Census figures, contains 2.67 persons, the average family 3.08 persons. Median household income in Franklin County, again according to 2000 Census figures, is $41,659, and the median family income is $32,009 for males and $24,078 for females. Per capita income for the county is $17,816.
The city of St. Albans, population 7,650 at the time of the 2000 Census, is the largest of 15 cities, towns and villages that comprise Franklin County. Much of the county is rural, the primary agricultural pursuit being dairy farming, but several small industries also flourish. Most of the communities offer elementary schools, active recreation programs and basic retail outlets, and public high schools are located in five of the county’s towns and cities. One of the 12 Community College of Vermont campus sites is located in St. Albans.
